Beautiful but somehow heartbreaking. Those are such apt words for this town. I don’t know what it feels like to visit here; not on holiday. I only visited once for a day and a half, to visit colleges. Then I moved here to go to one of them and have lived here since. It’s easier to take it slowly after living here for decades. I love living here, yet it seems it must be mind boggling and overwhelming for visitors! I’m sorry that the second night at that classic bar was a bit disappointing. I’ve had similar experiences on trips, and it can rather take the air out of your balloon. I wish now that I’d hit you up to meet while you were here; I could have joined you and sketched the man who returned while you gathered the story and his book notes :)

Thank you! 🧡 I will definitely try to return every year to New York, or at least every other year. There's so much to see and experience, and I think short visits will work better for me - now I know.

I read this on the plane on my way to New York, where one of our daughters lives. Our stays are always quick and I find it hard to get a handle on the city. So sorry you got sick, though!

You can’t step into the same river twice. Yet something woven through this essay carried me back to the East Village of the 1980s I lived in. Life is beautiful. Thank you.
